The Spanish Main
|
Following the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the Bahamas in 1492, and Spain's colonial expansion throughout the Caribbean basin and the mainland of America, the term Spanish Main came to refer to the coastal regions of the Americas that were under Spain's control from the 16th to the early 19th centuries. The Spanish Main stretched along the northern coast of South America and spanned northward across the Caribbean basin to the southern region of North America. Spanish galleons filled with treasure from the New World would sail the coastal seaways of the Spanish Main during their return voyage to Spain and often became the target of attack by pirates that roamed the region seeking riches and reward. |
